Introduction
Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, located in the city of Jaffna in the Northern Province. The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of war and victory. With its golden gopuram (tower), traditional rituals, and peaceful atmosphere, the temple attracts thousands of devotees and visitors every year.
This sacred site is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the Tamil Hindu identity in northern Sri Lanka.
Location and How to Get There
- Location: Nallur, Jaffna, Northern Province, Sri Lanka
- From Jaffna Town: Just 2–3 km from the city center. Tuk-tuks or buses are available.
- From Colombo: Take the train or drive (approx. 7–8 hours) to Jaffna city
History of Nallur Temple
The original temple dates back to the 10th century, but the current structure was rebuilt in 1749 by Don Juan Mappana Mudaliyar, a Tamil noble under Dutch rule. Over the centuries, it has grown in religious importance and today stands as one of the finest examples of Dravidian temple architecture in Sri Lanka.
The temple has remained a central part of Jaffna’s spiritual and cultural life, especially after the civil war, when it became a symbol of peace and unity.
Temple Architecture and Features
- Golden Gopuram (Tower): The tall entrance tower is covered in gold paint and detailed carvings of Hindu gods.
- Sacred Shrine Room: The inner sanctum (called garbhagriha) houses the main statue of Lord Murugan.
- Long Corridors & Pillars: Intricately carved pillars and wide halls are used during processions.
- Bell Tower & Sacred Tree: The temple also has a traditional bell tower and a holy tree (bo tree) in the courtyard.
Visitors are not allowed to take photos inside the temple, especially during prayer times, to maintain its sacredness.
Nallur Festival – The Grand Annual Celebration
One of the best times to visit Nallur Temple is during its annual festival, known as the Nallur Festival, held in August and lasting 25 days.
Highlights include:
- Traditional Chariot Procession (Ther Thiruvizha)
- Kavadi dancers and drummers
- Ritual fire-walking and fasting by devotees
- Beautifully decorated temple and vibrant crowds
Thousands of devotees from all over Sri Lanka and abroad attend this event.
Temple Etiquette and Dress Code
Since this is an active religious site, visitors should follow respectful behavior:
- Men should enter with bare chests or in white sarongs (shirtless in the inner sanctum)
- Women should wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees
- Remove footwear before entering
- No photography inside the main shrine
A peaceful and respectful attitude is expected from all visitors.
