Introduction to Udawalawe National Park

Located in southern Sri Lanka, Udawalawe National Park is one of the best places in the world to see wild elephants in their natural home. The park covers around 30,821 hectares and is famous for its open landscapes, grasslands, and water reservoirs that attract hundreds of animals.

Location & How to Get There

Location: Udawalawe is located between Ratnapura and Hambantota districts.

  • Nearest town: Embilipitiya
  • Distance from major cities:
    • From Colombo: ~4–5 hours by car
    • From Ella: ~2–3 hours
    • From Mirissa or Tangalle: ~2.5 hours

 

You can reach the park by private vehicle or tour operators. Public buses are also available to Embilipitiya.

  • Mode of Travel: By 4×4 jeep with a guide or park ranger
  • Clothing: Wear light clothes, a hat, and sunscreen. Bring water and binoculars.
