Climb this legendary mountain for spiritual meaning, breathtaking sunrises, and unforgettable views.

Adam’s Peak, also known as Sri Pada, is a sacred mountain in central Sri Lanka. Famous for the footprint-shaped rock at its summit, it attracts thousands of pilgrims and hikers every year. Whether you seek spiritual peace or mountain adventure, this majestic peak promises a truly unforgettable experience.

Introduction to Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada)

Adam’s Peak, locally known as Sri Pada, is one of the most sacred and famous mountains in Sri Lanka. Standing at 2,243 meters (7,359 feet), it offers not only stunning views but also deep spiritual value for people of many religions. Located in the Central Highlands, near the town of Hatton, it’s a must-visit for nature lovers, hikers, and pilgrims alike.

How to Get There

Most travelers reach Adam’s Peak from Hatton or Nallathanniya, which are connected by bus or train from Colombo or Kandy. From these towns, tuk-tuks or buses can take you to the trailhead

Religious Significance

Adam’s Peak is a unique site because people of different faiths believe the footprint-shaped mark at the summit belongs to a holy figure:

  • Buddhists believe it is the sacred footprint of Lord Buddha.

  • Hindus think it is the footprint of Lord Shiva.

  • Muslims and Christians believe it is the mark left by Adam after he was cast out of heaven.

This shared belief has made the mountain a place of peace and unity for centuries. Many pilgrims climb the mountain to pay respect and offer prayers at the small temple at the top.

The Pilgrimage Experience

The pilgrimage season runs from December to May, when the weather is better and the path is lit at night by electric lights. Most people start the climb at night (around 2:00 am) to reach the summit by sunrise.

  • Total steps: Over 5,000 steps to the top.
  • Climb time: Around 2.5 to 4 hours depending on fitness.
  • Popular route: The Hatton trail is the most used and scenic route.
  • Others: Kuruwita, Ratnapura, and Palabaddala are longer but quieter trails.

The moment the sun rises above the clouds is magical. You can see the shadow of the mountain forming a perfect triangle on the clouds—a rare and beautiful sight

Nature and Scenery

Adam’s Peak is located within the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, a rich biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. During your hike, you’ll pass through:

  • Dense forests
  • Misty mountain paths
  • Waterfalls and streams

You may also see rare birds, butterflies, and endemic plants. This makes it an amazing experience not just for pilgrims, but also for nature photographers and eco-tourists

History and Legends

Historical records show that pilgrims have climbed Sri Pada for over 1,000 years. Ancient kings like King Parakramabahu and King Nissanka Malla built rest stops and improved the trail. The site is also mentioned in Buddhist, Hindu, and Islamic texts, and even early European explorers like Marco Polo wrote about it.
