Introduction to Lankatilaka Temple

Lankatilaka Vihara, located near Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, is one of the most beautiful and historically important Buddhist temples on the island. Built in the 14th century, this temple is famous for its impressive brick architecture, detailed wall paintings, and a massive seated Buddha statue.

Lankatilaka is not just a religious place – it’s also an architectural treasure that shows the skill and devotion of ancient Sri Lankan craftsmen.

Historical Background

Lankatilaka Temple was built around 1344 AD during the reign of King Bhuvanekabahu IV of the Gampola Kingdom. The temple was designed by a South Indian architect named Sthapati Rayar, who skillfully combined Dravidian (South Indian) and Sinhalese architectural styles.

The temple was originally constructed using bricks and was later enhanced with decorative features and artwork by Kandyan kings.

Unique Architecture and Design

Lankatilaka stands tall on a natural rock called Panhalgala Rock, giving it a majestic look from a distance. The outer walls are beautifully decorated with stone carvings, arched entrances, and pillared corridors. Inside, the temple houses a large seated Buddha statue, surrounded by colorful murals that depict scenes from the Buddha’s life and Sri Lankan folklore.

The temple has two main sections:

  • The Image House (Pilimageya): Where the Buddha statue and wall paintings are located
  • The Shrine Room: Dedicated to Hindu gods like Vishnu and Skanda, showing the cultural blend of the era

Frescoes and Art

The Kandyan-era paintings on the inner walls are still well-preserved. These paintings feature:

  • Jataka tales (stories of the Buddha’s previous lives)
  • Floral and geometric patterns
  • Mythical creatures and traditional designs

These artworks are a great example of Sri Lankan temple art and offer deep insight into the island’s cultural and religious values.

Serene Surroundings and Atmosphere

Lankatilaka Temple is surrounded by green hills, paddy fields, and distant mountain ranges. From the top of the rock, you can enjoy stunning views of the countryside. The peaceful environment and spiritual vibe make it a perfect place for meditation, photography, and quiet reflection.

The temple is still active today, and visitors often see monks performing rituals or locals offering flowers and prayers.

Location and How to Get There

Lankatilaka Temple is located in Hiyarapitiya village, about 12 km from Kandy. You can reach it by tuk-tuk, taxi, or as part of a day trip that also includes Embekka Devalaya and Gadaladeniya Temple, which are nearby.
