Introduction
Minneriya National Park is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants in their natural home. Located in the North Central Province, near the town of Habarana, the park is famous for its seasonal event known as “The Gathering.” This is when hundreds of wild elephants come together around the Minneriya tank (a man-made lake), creating one of the most magical wildlife experiences in Asia.
The park is part of the Cultural Triangle, so it’s very close to places like Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, making it easy to visit during your historical tours.
The Elephant Gathering
Every year between July and October, water becomes scarce in the surrounding forests. As a result, large herds of elephants move to the Minneriya tank to drink water, find food, and socialize.
- Best time to see the gathering: July to September
- Elephant count: Sometimes over 300 elephants can be seen at once
- Why it’s special: Safe and natural space to observe wild elephants without fences
This gathering is considered the largest meeting of Asian elephants in the world.
Other Wildlife in the Park
While elephants are the main attraction, Minneriya is also home to:
- Over 170 species of birds
- Monkeys like toque macaques and purple-faced langurs
- Spotted deer, sambar deer
- Crocodiles and water monitors
- If you’re lucky, you might spot a leopard or a sloth bear
