Introduction
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of the most popular attractions in Sri Lanka. It is located in the small town of Pinnawala, near Kegalle, and is famous for caring for orphaned and injured elephants. Established in 1975, the orphanage offers a rare chance to see elephants up close in a safe and ethical environment.
Visitors can watch the elephants being fed, walk alongside them, and even witness them bathing in the nearby Ma Oya River, which is a favorite highlight for many.
How to Get There
Pinnawala is located on the Colombo–Kandy Road, about:
- 2.5 hours from Colombo
- 1.5 hours from Kandy
It is easily accessible by car, bus, or train (nearest station: Rambukkana).
History and Purpose
The orphanage began with just five baby elephants who lost their families in the wild. Today, Pinnawala is home to over 80 elephants, making it one of the world’s largest captive elephant herds.
The main goal of the orphanage is to provide shelter, food, and care for elephants who cannot survive in the wild due to injury, age, or abandonment. It is also used for elephant breeding and educating the public about elephant conservation.
What to See and Do
1. Elephant Bathing at Ma Oya
One of the most iconic experiences in Pinnawala is watching the elephants walk to the Ma Oya River and enjoy their bath. This happens twice a day – around 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The sight of elephants playing and splashing in the water is unforgettable.
2. Bottle Feeding Baby Elephants
If you visit during feeding times (usually 9:15 AM, 1:15 PM, and 5:00 PM), you can see baby elephants being bottle-fed. This is a favorite for families and children.
3. Elephant Observation and Interaction
You can observe how elephants are cared for and interact with them at a safe distance. Some private areas allow limited close-up encounters, always supervised by caretakers.

Educational Value
Pinnawala is not just a tourist spot. It plays a major role in educating people about elephant conservation. School children, university students, and researchers often visit the site to learn more about elephant behavior, habitats, and challenges faced in the wild.
