Ruwanwelisaya Stupa

-The Sacred White Dome of Anuradhapura

A timeless symbol of Buddhist devotion, built by King Dutugemunu, and revered by millions as a spiritual treasure in Sri Lanka’s ancient capital Anuradhapura.

Introduction to Ruwanwelisaya

Ruwanwelisaya, also known as Ruwanwali Maha Seya, is one of the most sacred Buddhist stupas in Sri Lanka. Located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, it is part of the Atamasthana—the Eight Sacred Sites that every Buddhist in Sri Lanka aims to visit at least once in their lifetime.

Built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BC, the stupa enshrines sacred relics of the Buddha and symbolizes unity, spiritual strength, and devotion. Its brilliant white dome can be seen from afar, standing tall as a beacon of faith and peace.

History and Construction

  • Built by: King Dutugemunu (reigned 161–137 BC)
  • Purpose: Enshrining sacred relics of Lord Buddha
  • Structure: Originally 55 meters tall, now restored to over 103 meters (338 feet) high
  • Significance: One of the largest stupas in the ancient world

King Dutugemunu could not see the completed stupa before he died. It is said that his brother finished the construction and held the first enshrinement ceremony, fulfilling the King’s sacred wish.

Religious Significance

Ruwanwelisaya is a major site for Buddhist pilgrimages, especially during full moon (Poya) days. It is believed to enshrine:

  • Hair and bone relics of the Buddha
  • Sacred items gifted by Indian Buddhist monks

Devotees visit to offer flowers, light oil lamps, and meditate in the peaceful courtyard. Rituals and chanting often take place, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.

Part of the Atamasthana (Eight Sacred Places)

Ruwanwelisaya is one of the Atamasthana—the eight most sacred Buddhist sites located in Anuradhapura. These are:

  1. Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi
  2. Ruwanwelisaya
  3. Thuparamaya
  4. Lovamahapaya
  5. Abhayagiriya
  6. Jetavanaramaya
  7. Mirisawetiya
  8. Lankarama

Among these, Ruwanwelisaya holds a special place as the main stupa built by the great king Dutugemunu, reflecting the golden era of Sri Lankan Buddhism.

Architectural Highlights

  • Design: Classic “bubble-shaped” dagoba (stupa)
  • Colour: Bright white dome symbolizing purity and wisdom
  • Elephant Wall: Surrounding wall features a row of carved stone elephants in a standing posture
  • Night View: When lit at night, the stupa appears almost heavenly under the stars

Surrounding structures include monk residences, Bo trees, and beautifully maintained walkways and gardens.

Ruwanwelisaya is more than just a historical site. It is a living, breathing place of faith, beauty, and history. Whether you are a Buddhist devotee or a curious traveller, your visit to Ruwanwelisaya will be a meaningful experience that connects you to the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka.
