Introduction to Weligama Beach
Weligama Beach is a wide sandy beach located on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, between Mirissa and Galle. The name “Weligama” means “sandy village” in Sinhala, and it truly lives up to its name. Known for its beginner-friendly waves, Weligama is a top destination for surfers, families, and backpackers. With soft golden sand, gentle waves, and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s a great place to enjoy beach life in Sri Lanka.
How to Get to Weligama Beach
Weligama Beach is in southern Sri Lanka, about 145 km from Colombo.
- By Train: Take a train from Colombo Fort to Weligama Station (about 3.5 to 4 hours). It’s scenic and affordable.
- By Bus: Catch a Matara-bound bus from Colombo or Galle and get off at Weligama (about 3–4 hours).
- By Car/Taxi: Drive via the Southern Expressway (E01). Takes around 2.5 to 3 hours from Colombo.
Once there, tuk-tuks or scooters are easy to find for getting around.
Things to Do at Weligama Beach
Surfing for Beginners
Weligama is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to learn surfing. The beach has soft, slow waves perfect for beginners. Surf schools and board rentals are available everywhere along the coast. If you’re new to surfing, this is a safe and fun place to start.
Relax on the Beach
Weligama Beach is long, clean, and peaceful. You can relax under the sun, read a book, or enjoy a cold drink from one of the nearby beach cafés. The shallow water makes it safe for swimming too.
Watch Stilt Fishermen
Just a short walk away, you can see traditional stilt fishermen sitting on wooden poles in the water. This old fishing method is unique to southern Sri Lanka and great for photos.
Take a Boat to Taprobane Island
In the middle of Weligama Bay lies Taprobane Island, a small private island with a villa once owned by a French count. You can view it from the beach or hire a local boat for a closer look.

- May to October brings occasional rain, but surfing is still possible with fewer crowds.
