ala National Park is the most famous and most visited wildlife park in Sri Lanka. Located in the southeastern part of the island, Yala is best known for its high chance of spotting leopards, elephants, and sloth bears in the wild. Covering over 975 square kilometers, Yala is the second-largest national park in the country and includes a mix of dry forests, grasslands, lagoons, and rocky outcrops.
How to Get There
Yala is located in the Hambantota District in Southern Sri Lanka.

Key Wildlife at Yala
Yala is home to more than 44 species of mammals and over 200 species of birds. Here are some of the park’s most popular animals:
- Leopards – Yala has one of the highest leopard densities in the world.

- Sloth bears – Often seen during fruit seasons, especially from May to July.

- Crocodiles and mongoose – Found near water areas.

Tip: Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to spot animals.
Safari Experience
Yala is divided into five blocks, and Block 1 is the most popular for safaris. You can book a private or shared jeep safari with a driver and tracker who knows the best places to find wildlife.
- Best time to visit: February to July (dry season, animals gather around water).
- Safari duration: Morning (6 AM – 10 AM), Evening (2 PM – 6 PM), or full day.
